Government announces new short breaks funding

The Children's Trust has issued a warm welcome to the Government’s announcement today (11th December 2010) of £800 million of funding for local authorities over the next four years to provide short breaks for families with disabled children. Andrew Ross, Chief Executive of The Children’s Trust, said: “Thousands of families will be cheering at this news. We know that parents have worried that their disabled children would lose out badly at a time of national belt-tightening, but this shows real Government action on its stated commitment to protect the most vulnerable in society.” “Providing high quality short break care for severely disabled children, which allows families to recharge their batteries knowing that their child is safe, can be a source of strength to families who might otherwise be stretched to breaking point. “Government funding for short breaks has allowed The Children’s Trust to provide expert, trained care for children in their own homes as well as ‘Holiday Camps’ at our facilities in Tadworth, Surrey, where they enjoy organised fun and games alongside their peers. “It looks as though this new funding announcement will help us to keep these vital services going.”
