"Charlie has been through a lot in 10 years since he got seriously ill. The first photos are of Charlie in rehabilitation at The Children’s Trust. The older one in the white t- shirt is a few months before Charlie went for deep brain stimulation surgery.

"He had the surgery done in November 2020 to improve the use of his arms and hands so he’s able to do things for himself again. At the moment it’s still early days of seeing any benefits but we hope that we will see Charlie using his arms and hands soon." - Leeann, Charlie's mum

What makes these photos special to your story?

"After seven months in hospital, arriving at The Children's Trust meant that our family was reunited. We had Christmas together at Tadworth, enjoyed time together in the grounds and visited beauty spots and shopping centres in the area, with a new-found freedom. Physiotherapy started me on a path towards leading an active life once more, and I was delighted to be back in a school room.

"My climbing journey is very special to me. I climbed with a ventilator to start with and in 2018 I was filmed climbing at Horseshoe Quarry in an award-winning film, Reach. In 2019 I started at Sheffield University." - Clare

These photos all show Ellis doing the normal everyday things that he couldn’t do for such a long time. The Children's Trust takes massive credit for getting him back to normal." - Matt, Ellis's dad

The second is Ezra on his first day out of PICU after having a lifesaving craniotomy, followed by photos of his time at The Children’s Trust – the staff from Maple house who cared for him, and ringing the bell at the end of his rehabilitation.

"Now, Ezra loves being outside and being able to walk by himself and explore. He’s doing amazing at school, learning new things, speaking more and more each day, and trying to use his affected arm so much more. Mainly just being a little boy running and playing with his friends.” – Laura, Ezra’s mum

“The first photo is Ezra 28 days before he had a life changing stroke. No signs of what was to come.

Within a week of admission to The Children's Trust, there were signs of improvement and she formally emerged in April 2020.

"She was deemed to have capacity to make her own decision to return home in Aug 2020 and the second photo shows Floss standing with her me to show just how much progress she made in six months at The Children's Trust; a world class charity that gave Floss her smile back. Thank you." - Robin, Floss's dad

After four months in hospital we were able to come home and you can see how proud he was! The next show Joey’s time at The Children’s Trust. Joey came alive in the fabulous computer room and really looked forward to those sessions.

"One of my favourite photos from The Children’s Trust is Joey’s tea round as he had found some confidence and would ask what everyone wanted, make a list, make the drinks then wheel the trolley around the house to deliver them. The last photo is Joey and I looking to the future over the hills. Josh was just two-and-a-half when a rare and potentially fatal polio-style virus struck in 2016. He spent six months at The Children's Trust in 2017.

What makes these photos special to your story?

"The picture of us all with Josh walking out of the front gate in July 2017 was one of the most emotional and memorable moments of our lives. Josh was completely paralysed by a virus that caused Acute Flaccid Myelitis in July 2016. After 6 months in PICU, he came to The Children's Trust for rehabilitation, where he improved so much that by the time he left he was able to walk out the front gates by himself!

"The second was taken at his leaving BBQ on Mulberry house, which was a very happy day because after a year away from home, Josh was finally able to come back home. It is also special because it shows what a happy, positive boy he is, despite everything he has been through.

"Whilst Josh has not fully recovered and his right arm remains paralysed, he is thriving at mainstream school and lives a life that I never could have imagined in those early days. Without The Children's Trust, he would not be where he is today and we can never thank everyone there enough." - Karen, Josh's mum

"The first photo is the day Mollie was admitted to hospital, the worst day of our lives. Mollie was in hospital for eight weeks in total.

"After that there are photos of Mollie with the amazing team at The Children’s Trust, she would not be where she is today if she hadn’t been given her three month placement.

"The last four photos are very special because they are of Mollie and I back at home and being able to enjoy life again after a very traumatic illness that sadly left Mollie with severe brain injury. She will forever have difficulties but thank you to the Children’s Trust for helping her get back on her feet on the road to recovery." - Ceri, Mollie's mum

We were told whilst ill Riley may not be able to attend mainstream school.

"The next two are Riley celebrating his prom night and finally becoming a teenager, and the last ones show a family holiday to Florida, with lots of walking and fun, very tiring but he managed it very well with the exception of photo 7. Photo 7 - Exhausted!" - Amanda, Riley's mum

After months of testing, he was diagnosed. Robbie was seven in the second photo and had been admitted to Mulberry for an extended stay to cover David being born; this was the first time he met his youngest brother, on the sofa in the Mulberry lounge and the whole family was together." - Belinda, Robbie's mum

"The next photo was Robbie’s 11th birthday, a drumming party in Mulberry lounge with the extended family. By this time he was mainly living in Mulberry, coming home for alternate weekends, as his care needs were so high.

"The last photo was Robbie’s last outing to the treehouse in The Children’s Trust gardens on a sunny spring day. We believe that he had kept going for so long, defying medical expectations, because he was so happy and felt so loved – and that was due in no small part to the wonderful care he received at The Children’s Trust." - Belinda, Robbie's mum

What makes these photos special to your story?

"We didn't know what was going to happen with Tommy and his life. Would be be able to walk, talk or eat on his own? Slowly he regained those skills during the first six months of rehabilitation in Tadworth. These photos show the love and creativity the staff brought to make sure a two year old would want to engage with the sessions. Tommy still struggled with balance and coordination and walking completely on his own for some time.

"Frequent falls or bumped heads were commonplace but he never gave up. Tommy's speech was also ataxic and slow, but we are so excited that he is now in theatre and gave the speech at his 8th grade graduation in 2020. No one has problems hearing Tommy now. The family photo was taken this Christmas 2020 with Dad Tom, Mum Tina big brother Jack and our dog Suki. I am sure that the love, confidence and creativity instilled in Tommy for those months in Tadworth made an impact that lasted a lifetime not only on who Tommy is now but who we are as a family." - Tina, Tommy's mum

    Tommy
