Love can find us in the most unexpected places, and for two devoted volunteers at The Children's Trust, it has blossomed through their shared passion for helping others. Having dedicated their time to volunteering, they never imagined their journey would lead them to each other.

A chance meeting led to an unexpected connection

After years of donating money to various causes, Steve wanted to do more. Living as a pensioner, he found himself with a bit of extra time on his hands and a desire to give back.

During one of the early shifts, he met Tina. A humorous conversation about gathering supplies and Nerf guns, broke the ice and led to an outing outside of work. What began as a friendship and a shared journey of volunteering and giving back, has blossomed into a beautiful relationship. The happy couple celebrated their wedding on 30 June 2025.

Life lessons and gratitude

Tina shares, “One of the most beautiful aspects of volunteering has been the sense of camaraderie within our team. Every shift is a mix of light-hearted banter, the quiet satisfaction of helping others, and watching regular visitors recognise our growing presence in the community.

“My journey here has been more than just an opportunity to volunteer; it has taught me invaluable life lessons. Having endured some personal challenges, I’ve come to appreciate the beauty in every moment. These experiences have instilled in me a deep-seated gratitude for life and a resolve to make every day count.

" It’s in these moments - whether I’m marking down prices in the back of the shop or greeting families at the front - that I remember the simple truth: life is precious, and every act of kindness enriches both giver and receiver."

The joys of volunteering

Steve shares, “Whether it’s the quiet joy in a small gesture from a child, the supportive smile from a colleague when someone is absent, or the spontaneous gatherings when our team starts talking about the wedding, every day at The Children’s Trust reaffirms my commitment to volunteering.”

The couple shares, “Volunteering at The Children’s Trust has changed my life in more ways than one. No matter your age or background, there is always an opportunity to make a difference - and sometimes, in doing so, you may just find a whole new chapter waiting to be written.”
