Spring enrichment week: creative and sensory experiences for families
With children off school for the Easter break, families at The Children’s Trust enjoyed a vibrant spring enrichment programme packed with creativity, movement and sensory experiences.
Our enrichment week programmes give children, siblings, parents, staff and volunteers the opportunity to come together, try new activities and enjoy meaningful time as a community.
Across our national specialist centre in Tadworth, Surrey, there was something for everyone – from arts, crafts, and dance to calming sound baths and sensory theatre. Each activity was carefully designed to support wellbeing, encourage communication and offer joyful experiences for the children we support.
Getting crafty
We were delighted to welcome Happy Glaze Ceramics, who led a hands-on ceramics workshop giving children the opportunity to paint their own tiles. Using brushes, stamps, stickers and a variety of colours, children explored different textures and techniques while expressing their creativity in their own way.
The workshop encouraged social interaction, with staff, families and siblings sitting together and creating side by side. Children used their preferred communication methods such as touch cues and visual aids to make choices and share ideas, enjoying a rich sensory experience in a relaxed and supportive environment.
Traditional Easter crafts were also a big hit. Children and young people enjoyed making chocolate nests, mixing, shaping and decorating their own sweet treats, as well as creating colourful Easter bonnets, exploring bright spring colours and textures.
Fun and games
Our Easter egg hunt around the beautiful grounds of our Tadworth site got everyone moving, and an egg-and-spoon race tested balance, focus and determination.
The fun continued in assistive technology, where children and young people took part in games designed to be accessible for all. Using adapted switches and buttons, they raced remote controlled cars along a straight track, putting their reflexes to the test. There was also plenty of excitement with Nerf target shooting, where focus and timing came into play.
A treat for the senses
Children took part in calming sensory experiences, including time with a friendly PAT dog, sensory theatre sessions and a relaxing sound bath in the sensory hydrotherapy pool, supporting wellbeing and relaxation.
Sensory Sounds also delivered a highly personalised Eye Music workshop. Children’s movements and vocalisations triggered changes in lights, colours and sounds, increasing engagement and encouraging communication in an inclusive and empowering way. As the children recognised their impact, they became more responsive, leading to even more movement and communication. This session was inclusive to all and proved to be highly beneficial for people of all ages and abilities.
The joy of movement
Kalpesh from KZ Dance led an energetic, music-filled dance session, welcoming children, families, siblings and staff. Participants explored different dance styles, celebrating movement, colour and self-expression.
The session concluded with a Holi-inspired celebration, where participants performed for one another before enjoying colourful powder activities, finishing the enrichment weeks with joy, laughter and shared connection.
