Enriching lives through friendship and connection

Published on: 26/02/26

The children and families we support took part in a week-long programme of enrichment activities, from animal handling to music sessions.

Meeting animals

We were delighted to welcome supporter Kelly and her daughter who brought in a selection of animals for the children to gently hold, cuddle, and explore. It was a lovely opportunity for the children to experience different fur and skin textures and learn more about the animals. The session created moments of joy, curiosity, and connection. Children were excited to ask questions, learn about different species, and engage directly through touch and observation.

The opportunity to cuddle and interact closely with the animals supported emotional wellbeing, offering comfort, calmness, and a sense of connection. Families shared that the experience was uplifting and grounding, contributing positively to mental health and overall wellbeing.

Making beats

Bloco Do Sol led the children, families and staff in a drumming session, proving that music is truly universal and accessible to people of all ages and abilities. Participants were able to join in regardless of experience, creating an inclusive and energising atmosphere.

The session was lively, creative, and full of fun. It encouraged teamwork, confidence, and shared enjoyment, providing an opportunity for peers to connect, express themselves, and celebrate rhythm together. The collective experience strengthened social bonds and promoted positive mental wellbeing.

Storytelling through music

Pluck Theatre brought together music and storytelling with a sensory harp workshop and puppetry performance. The harp performance brought a peaceful and calming presence to the event. The gentle, beautiful sound created a reflective atmosphere that supported relaxation and emotional regulation for children and adults alike.

The puppetry show was imaginative and engaging, capturing the attention of families as they followed the stories and watched them unfold. The combination of sound, storytelling, and visual creativity created a multi-sensory experience that stimulated imagination and encouraged shared moments of wonder.

A trip to the farm

Students from The Children's Trust School set off on an exciting adventure to Bocketts Farm in Surrey. The children got up close with a whole menagerie of friendly farm animals; from inquisitive goats and sheep to fluffy rabbits and clucking chickens. It was a day full of sensory sounds, smells and textures – and of course lots of fun!

Creative cooking

The children got hands on during this highly tactile and sensory session, which gave them the opportunity to explore ingredients through touch, smell, and taste. This approach encouraged curiosity and experimentation in a safe and enjoyable environment.

The children loved exploring during this session, building their confidence, independence, and practical skills while having fun. The session supported wellbeing through creativity, shared experiences, and the joy of discovering new flavours and textures.

Friendship Ball

The week finished with the Friendship Ball; a mini disco designed to entertain and uplift. Children, families and staff were treated to a singing performance from Lucy and were able to dance along or simply enjoy watching others and soaking up the atmosphere.

It was an emotional and inspiring event. Lucy’s powerful performance moved some staff and families to tears, creating a shared emotional experience that strengthened connection and belonging. The ball provided a meaningful opportunity for peers to come together, enjoy live music, and celebrate friendship. Being surrounded by friends while listening to live music had a positive impact on wellbeing and mental health, reinforcing the importance of community and shared experiences.

As we begin settling back into our routines, we’re reminded of how much enrichment brings us together. It offers a meaningful time for children, families, and staff to connect and enjoy activities beyond rehabilitation or school, creating a truly cherished experience for everyone to engage in.
