Thank you to Children in Need

Taking a short break from their intensive rehabilitation programme, youngsters at The Children’s Trust, the UK’s leading charity for children with brain injury, made special thank you signs for those who donated to Children in Need this year. Covered in glitter, paint and other craft bits, children receiving specialist brain injury rehabilitation treatment took some time out to focus on fun, and made signs to say thank you for the generous donations received from BBC Children in Need. Some of the money raised on the appeal night (Friday 18 November) helps The Children’s Trust fund a health play specialist who works with the children taking them on day trips and fun activities – things that can make a crucial difference to a child’s rehabilitation. Every year over 40,000 children in the UK are left with a brain injury as a result of an accident or illness. Based in Tadworth, Surrey, The Children’s Trust offers the largest residential brain injury rehabilitation unit in the country. Annie Murphy, Leisure and Activities Coordinator, said: “Play time and activities help the children that come here following a brain injury in all kinds of ways; whether it’s helping them to settle in and get to know the staff, rebuilding their confidence and self-esteem, or even supporting them through medical procedures. Through play, children can practice the skills they learn in rehabilitation sessions in a fun and exciting way, and often they don’t even realise the progress they’re making. It’s a magical feeling when a child, who has been seriously ill for a long time, starts to smile.” BBC Children in Need visited The Children’s Trust earlier this year and met Seb, who received intensive brain injury rehabilitation at the centre following a road traffic accident.
