Student Volunteering Week

Student volunteers ‘Gift a Shift’ to support The Children’s Trust during Student Volunteering Week (20 – 26 February).

Student Volunteering Week (SVW) is the annual celebration of the contribution that students make in their local communities through volunteering. We at The Children’s Trust want to encourage students and young people to take up volunteering opportunities in our charity shops, at events, and beyond and SVW gave us the perfect chance to do so. We decided to get involved by collaborating with local universities to encourage students to take part in our ‘shops challenge’.

Taking on the challenge

Royal Holloway, University of London and Kingston University London signed up to volunteer and compete against each other to see who could raise the most money in their shop in one day. They helped with managing incoming donations, pricing and displaying them and other general housekeeping. Students from Royal Holloway had a particularly interesting challenge as they volunteered on the first day of trading at the Chertsey shop in three months. The shop has recently been closed due to staff shortages. On an average day between 35 – 100 items are processed to be sold on the shop floor, but Royal Holloway volunteers successfully processed over 250 items of stock during their challenge. Chertsey shop manager Sandra said ‘We’ve just reopened the shop so having the Royal Holloway students to support us was great. It was lovely to have some company and the enthusiasm of the volunteers was catching!’

And the winners are…!

The four students from Kingston University supported our assistant shop manager in the Tattenham Corner shop. The team processed a record number of 393 donated items on the day, and as a result won the title of the Student Volunteering Week, Charity Shop Challenge winners 2017. The students who volunteered during SVW made such a positive impact on the operations in our shops, and it was wonderful to collaborate with local universities. Karla from Royal Holloway said: ‘I would definitely recommend volunteering for The Children’s Trust. It makes me feel good to help in any way I can, and I feel like I’m making a difference.’

If you're interested in volunteering with The Children's Trust, we're looking for students to sign up to 'Gift a Shift' at our Easter Fair, London Marathon, Summer Screen and The Supercar Event.
