Just before Samuel’s first birthday, he was under the weather with a blocked nose. His mum Simona kept a close eye on him but thought it was just a cold. One night, she found him hot and limp and called an ambulance.Samuel was diagnosed with viral encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain caused by a virus. He was stabilised but acquired a severe brain injury caused by a prolonged seizure.Samuel was transferred to The Children’s Trust for intensive rehabilitation. Therapists helped Samuel to build strength so that he would be able to hold himself up and use his limbs confidently. Additionally, he had to learn to eat solid food again and learn to adapt to his sight loss.Samuel’s mum, Simona said: “Samuel loves music and responded very well to music therapy at The Children’s Trust. The music soothed and relaxed him when he was frightened or anxious. He would reach out and touch the instruments, exploring their shape and plucking the guitar strings. We still practice the musical skills that Samuel learned at the charity and I know that it brings him so much joy.
