Musician who overcame head injury performs at The Children's Trust

A musician who overcame a head injury has entertained staff and young people at The Children’s Trust. Rebecca Dancer, from Horsham, performed to children and young people who are going through similar rehabilitation as she did following her injury. The 20-year-old accompanied herself on piano whilst singing a mixture of her own songs and cover versions. Rebecca, who sustained a head injury at 12, believes there are therapeutic benefits of music for children recovering from a brain injury. During her performance, Hazel Thompson, Leisure and Activity Co-ordinator at the Trust handed out instruments to the children so that they could contribute. Rebecca said: “I was touched to have the opportunity to play for the children. It was overwhelming to see them joining in and I hope they enjoyed it as much as I did. “I have some insight into the power that music can have to heal and bring a special quality into people's lives. I feel it's very important to share my music with those who have difficulties in their own lives, as music can be loved and appreciated by everyone, no matter what their circumstances.” Rebecca missed an entire year of school when she sustained her own injury from fainting, hitting a wall and fracturing her skull and enduring severe concussion. She lost the ability to read or write as she could before, couldn’t look at a screen for too long or go out in the daylight. “It was during this time that piano became my comfort and solace,” she said. “Although I had been learning the piano since the age of 6, that period was when I began to write songs, and the piano took on a very special significance for me. This feeling has intensified over the years, and I now feel drawn to follow the path to becoming a singer songwriter professionally.” Rebecca is now focusing all her energies on pursuing her dream of becoming a singer songwriter.
