We're proud to have over 500 volunteers who donate their time in a variety of ways. Here a few of them explain what they do, why they got involved and how they help...
Pauline - volunteer gardener
"After 40 years in an office I decided to take a horticultural course. Knowing that The Children's Trust has such a large amount of land to manage I thought I could put my new skills to good use. I am continuously learning from the Head Gardener. I come in for one or two days a week and do pretty much everything. My favourite areas to work on are the children's gardens. I feel like I am contributing to their lives just a little bit by keeping those gardens tidy"
Jenny - classroom volunteer
"I started volunteering at The Children's Trust about 14 years ago when I would bring my dogs in to spend time with some of the children. Over the years I have developed a special bond with many of the children and I find it so rewarding when they achieve a milestone, however small, as I know how hard they worked to get there. It is a true pleasure to volunteer with these children."
Abby - charity shop volunteer
"When I finished uni I knew I wanted to volunteer some of my time with a charity before getting a job. I went to a number of charity shops on the high street and The Children's Trust was by far the friendliest and most welcoming. Now I come in every Thursday morning and do what is needed. I often work the till or put up displays. I have even done some window dressing. It has been great working here and getting to know the regular customers as well as the other volunteers in the shop."
Chris - volunteer driver
"Sailing in Staines, trips to Great Ormond Street, ice-skating at Guildford, Diggerland, horseriding in Carshalton and Epsom – just a few of the trips I've taken as a driver for The Children's Trust. The children are always accompanied by their nurses and carers, so all we have to do is drive them, smoothly and safely, to and from their destination. And if it's to a medical appointment, I have plenty of time while I'm waiting to catch up on all that reading I've been putting off!"
Joy - collection box volunteer
"I have worked at The Children's Trust for over seven years now. I answered an ad in our local church magazine for someone to count the money collected from the charity boxes we put in places like shops and cafes. As I had previously worked in a bank and I live locally I thought it was a perfect match. I really enjoy working with the people here. It's a very friendly environment."
