Crystal Palace trio visit

Crystal Palace FC first teamers - Bakary Sako, Chung Yong-Lee and Julian Speroni – put Premier League action to one side on Wednesday as they connected with young fans in a visit to The Children’s Trust in Tadworth, Surrey. The trip was organised by the Crystal Palace FC Foundation and the team were delighted to help raise the spirits of some of the young children within the rehabilitation centre.   First team assistant manager and long-time supporter of The Children’s Trust, John Salako, accompanied the players on the visit and joined in as the players signed autographs and posed for photos with the youngsters. Visits from special guests have proved a fantastic way of giving the children the boost they need to get better and one particular example of that was 11-year-old Mikey.

Mikey, who is at The Children’s Trust for intensive rehabilitation following a brain tumour, got to spend some one on one time with the Crystal Palace cohort. His goal is to relearn how to talk and walk again. His mum Donna was with Mikey when he met the Crystal Palace players:  “Mikey has had a really tough few years. He’s had brain surgery three times and lots of chemo. We have been at The Children’s Trust for six months now and Mikey has worked really hard at his rehabilitation. Mikey loves football and he was really excited about meeting the Palace players. He was determined to show them what he has been practising – he stood up, walked and even kicked a football. He was so proud. Their visit has been the perfect thing to keep him motivated. ”   Julian Speroni commented on the impact that these visits can have on young patients: “Hopefully we have put a smile on the faces of some of these children. These youngsters are inspiring people, with great bravery and fight in them and it’s especially important that they have a charity like The Children’s Trust to aid their recovery.”
