HRH the Duchess of Gloucester attends The Children's Trust's Service of Celebration

Southwark Cathedral was full to the brim with children, parents, carers, staff and supporters of The Children's Trust yesterday for a special service to celebrate the first 25 years of the charity.

Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Gloucester was joined by actress Amanda Burton and musical theatre performer Elaine Paige OBE to honour the national charity.

The Very Reverend Colin Slee, Dean of Southwark, led the congregation in readings and music to celebrate the tireless work of the Trust and also remember the children who have passed away. Alfie Russell and James Topping who both came to the Trust previously for rehabilitation after sustaining brain injuries also read at the service.

Speaking at the event Elaine Paige OBE said: “I’ve been involved with the charity for more than 25 years, first introduced through the Variety Club of Great Britain when I presented the then Tadworth Court with a minibus. I’ve remained faithful ever since to the wonderful charity and have witnessed first hand what it’s like to see many of the children come back to almost full health.

“I’ve watched The Children's Trust change into a wonderful state-of-the-art facility – it’s still the only place in the country of its kind. It’s a charity I will support forever.”

Actress Amanda Burton, who read at the service, commented on The Children's Trust: “I’ve been swept along with the enthusiasm, complete dedication and pure joy in changing people’s lives. What they [The Children's Trust] do is beyond words – the support it brings to the whole family unit is incredible – you see the children happy and laughing. Working with the Trust has allowed me the chance to give something back – it’s life changing to be involved. It’s very life affirming.”

Andrew Ross, Chief Executive of The Children's Trust, said: “Twenty five years ago The Children's Trust began its journey towards a world where children are all nurtured and valued, happy and safe, with ample opportunities for play, learning and fulfilment, regardless of disability… We now have the confidence to look outwards from our site in Surrey to address the needs of children with disabilities across the country.”
